This examination is carried out using a laryngoscope and a stroboscope light and is among the most common methods of examining the vocal chords. The examining instruments are inserted through the mouth and the preferred method of seeing the vocal chords at work is to phonate on the vowel 'EE'.
Indirect laryngoscopy

This examination is carried out using a flexible laryngoscope and fiber-optics. The instruments are inserted through the nose and used to observe the larynx in closer detail. In this clip you can see the larynx in action on a natural vibrato, pop vibrato, a growl sequence and laughter.
